4th of July 2009
  • Independence Day celebrations are usually outdoors and they include: parades, concerts, festivals, picnics, barbecues, and fireworks in the evening.
  • The barbecue items usually include burgers, hot dogs, chicken, ribs, garden & potato salads, baked beans and watermelon.
  • Places are decorated with flags and other patriotic stuff and people wear red, white & blue, the colors of the American flag.
  • In 1782 Congress, selected The Eagle to be the National emblem.
  • Thirty-two cities are named “Eagle” — after the majestic bird that serves as our national symbol.
  • Benjamin Franklin, however, did not like the choice and preferred the turkey as the US national symbol.
  • Eleven cities have “Independence” in their name.
  • Estimated population in 1776: 2,5 million people.
  • Current population: more than 300 million people
  • The stars on the original American flag were arranged in a circle to show that all colonies were equal.
  • The American national anthem, the "Star-Spangled Banner," is set to the tune of an English drinking song ("To Anacreon in Heaven"). Click on this link for the lyrics and here to watch a video.
